Lady's mantle (Alchemilla) - botanical knowledge in brief These perennial herbaceous plants can be found in gardens as cultivated plants and in nature as wild herbs. The lady's mantle is a light-hungry and water-loving plant and often grows on river or pond banks. It is a deciduous plant, up to 30 centimetres tall, with hairy, lobed leaves that, with a little imagination, remind us of a wide cape. Hence the romantic name Lady's mantle. Alchemilla blooms from May to September with small panicle-like yellow-green flowers. In autumn, the above-ground parts of the plant retreat, the rootstock survives the winter.

Lady's mantle in folk medicine
In the vernacular this plant is also called women's skirt, women's smock or baptismal bowl as well as taum Mantel. The latter two names can be explained by a characteristic of the lobes to catch raindrops and morning dew. The lady's mantle has been known as a medicinal herb since ancient times. The ancient Romans and later the Germanic tribes discovered the special relation of this plant to various women's ailments. Gradually, however, the therapists explored further areas of application for women's mantle preparations. Today, this medicinal herb is considered a gentle and effective remedy not only against typical female complaints, but also against numerous other diseases. For example, as early as in the Middle Ages, medical experts used this herb to combat gastrointestinal upsets, headaches and to heal wounds. To this day, it remains the most important area of action of women's mantle preparations.

Active ingredients and effects of lady's mantle In naturopathy, the entire herb is used without roots. The active ingredients contained in the lady's mantle can best unfold their healing effect in the form of a tincture. Herba Sale offers you a pure herbal extract with alcohol, produced in an environmentally friendly way and completely free of sheep substances.

This medicinal herb contains flavonoids (2%) and natural tanning agents (8%), whereby the tanning agent Agrimoniin (C82H54O52) represents the largest part of the active agents of the latter group.

The tanning agents have a proven astringent effect. The astringent effect is achieved by these plant active ingredients by changing the structure of the proteins and solidifying them. In this way, the lady's mantle preparations support wound healing both externally and internally.

By healing smaller wounds and inflammation centres in the gastrointestinal tract, the preparation alleviates discomfort in this part of the body and stops diarrhoea.

In a concerted action, the tannins and flavonoids also have an antispasmodic and relaxing effect. In particular the preparation helps against the typical menstrual complaints and cramps. In addition, the gynaecological mantle extract proves to be an effective remedy for headaches and contributes overall to a vital body feeling. Contraindications and instructions for use

We recommend that you consult a doctor or therapist of your choice before taking our Lady's Mantle tincture. Especially in case of suspicion of intolerance to tannins and flavonoids, an examination should precede the treatment with our Lady's Mantle tincture.
