Reishi - the ten thousand year mushroom
Reishi, one of the best known and most effective medicinal mushrooms ever, is called Ling Zhi - "the spirit plant" - in Chinese. Reishi is also often called the "Divine Mushroom of Immortality" or the "Ten Thousand Years Mushroom". These names may sound like an exaggeration at first glance, but a closer look reveals that the Reishi actually has impressive healing powers. It cannot give immortality, but the vital mushroom supports the body in the fight against such dangerous diseases as arteriosclerosis and cancer, asthma and liver disease. The fungus Reishi has a detoxifying and blood-cleansing effect, is anti-inflammatory and strengthens the immune system.

In naturopathy and folk medicine, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), successfully used since the end of the year, the "immortality mushroom" has been used more and more in Europe in recent years.

The scientific name Ganoderma lucidum refers to the optical properties of this fungus: its fruiting body is covered with a shiny layer of resin. In the middle of the fruiting body, reddish brown, the colour brightens slightly towards the edge.

The Reishi mushroom is a Saprobiont, which means that it thrives on the dead organic substance. First and foremost, these medicinal mushrooms settle on oak trunks and old roots. These parasitically living fungi can also be found on other deciduous trees, conifers infest them less frequently. As a tree pest, however, Reishi is without any noteworthy significance.

The hat can reach a diameter of up to 20 centimetres and is about 1 to 3 centimetres thick. The mushroom head sits on a clearly pronounced short stem.

Presumably this mushroom is spread world-wide, is not to be distinguished however for a layman from its next relatives. The Reishi is cultivated in the meantime in several countries successfully on the plantations put on for it.

Note: The medicinal mushrooms used as food supplements come exclusively from organic farming and are grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

However, this vital mushroom is not suitable for consumption, but must be processed into a powder, extract or tincture.
